Cultivating Skills, Confidence, and Community
At Newlands Bishop Farm, our horticulture program offers adults with learning difficulties and mental health conditions the chance to engage in hands-on gardening activities, fostering personal growth and community involvement.
A Flourishing Environment
Our farm boasts a large greenhouse, two spacious polytunnels, and multiple vegetable beds. Project workers actively participate in planning and cultivating a variety of plants, including seasonal bedding, vegetables, and herbs. These are not only available for purchase at our on-site shop but also used in Berry’s Café, integrating farm-to-table practices.
Learning Through Doing
Participants are involved in every stage of the horticultural process—from seed selection and planting to maintenance and harvesting. This immersive approach helps develop:
- Practical Skills: Understanding plant care, soil health, and sustainable gardening techniques.
- Life Skills: Enhancing responsibility, teamwork, and time management.
- Confidence: Achieving personal goals and contributing to the farm’s success.
Diverse Gardens to Explore
Our horticulture team maintains several themed gardens, each offering unique learning experiences:
- Sensory Garden: Designed to stimulate the senses with aromatic plants and textured foliage.
- Recycled Garden: Showcasing creativity through upcycled materials and sustainable practices.
- Cottage Garden: Featuring traditional English flora, providing a tranquil space for reflection.
Community Engagement
Our horticulture program extends beyond the farm, with project workers participating in community gardening services, assisting local residents and organizations in maintaining green spaces. This not only benefits the community but also enriches the participants’ sense of purpose and belonging.
