Wet, windy and its almost winter….

Sorry for the quiet times on the blog! The farms internet has been very temperamental in all the wet/ windy weather so its been difficult to get online! The upside to all the wet weather is that we have seen some great rainbows over the farm in the last two weeks! As always the farm continues to be busy in all areas. The gardening team are starting to begin their winter contracts as the grass has almost stopped growing.  Winter work includes small landscaping jobs, hedge cutting and leaf collecting. It also includes lots of log splitting so that we…

Open day success!

Well Friday 13th turned out to be a lucky one for us! When preparing in the morning the sky threatened to rain a couple of times and had us worried but it came up trumps and gave us a perfect afternoon. It felt like one of our busiest open days yet with lots of activities for all to get involved in. The horses behaved in their displays (phew) and stood perfectly for people to come and have a go at grooming them. The farms home-made apple juice was a huge success with all of it being sold on the day! We…

RSA come to the farm!

Yet another busy week at the farm! A group of employees from RSA joined us for the day  on Wednesday to help us with some jobs that we often don't get time to do. They decided that they would give our pool room and toilets a much-needed lick of paint! The toilets are now nice and bright and look new again! The pool room is a porta cabin where the  project workers have their morning meeting, breaks and have the chance to keep dry if its raining! It was beginning to look a bit old and in desperate need of…

End of April update…

The horses have now moved onto their summer grazing and are very happy to have lots of lovely grass to gorge themselves on! We went up there on Friday morning to find all of them having a morning snooze! Basil couldn't even make the effort to stand up and greet us... The farm shop is slowly filling up again, with lots of contributions from the wood work team. The shop will fill up with lots of produce from the vegetable beds over the next few months... Summer hanging baskets will be available to order soon, in the mean time the…

Weather Watching!

The difference in weather during the space of a couple of weeks has been remarkable! Hopefully this week will see the real arrival of spring and we can enjoy some good weather! Minus the April showers if possible! The heater which keeps the young plants warm during the spring cold snaps decided that it would be a good time to break down, and as a result we lost some of our young bedding plants unfortunately. The remaining plants got treated to a few nights in the office until the new heater arrived to put in the green house. The gardening…

Busy times!

As usual we are all trying to keep up with the weather at the farm! All the materials needed to make this years hanging baskets have arrived, with a bit more warm weather the plants will be ready to go in them ready for a brilliant summer display! Over the last two weeks almost everyone has been helping to cut back the hazel nut and hawthorn trees in the top horse field so that over the next two years we can train them to grow in a hedge. Billie's eye is on the mend, she's still under the supervision of…

Spring preperations have started!

Project worker forums took place last week which allowed the project workers to discuss any ideas they have for the farm for now and in the future. It is a great time for everyone to share their views and to make sure that what we are doing at the farm is what everyone wants (although ideas of elephants in the animal care section may not be achieved!). Aside from the project worker forums the whole farm has been catching up with work that wasn't able to be done in the snow. The horses field is finally poo picked much to…

Snow fun!

What a change the weather has bought! The farm is under a blanket of snow, all the horses have their nice warm rugs on and the chickens are in the stable keeping warm! Everyone at the farm would like to thank everyone involved with fun in the park in Solihull, organised by Solihull's Soroptomist society. They have very generously raised £1500 for the farm! The money will be put to good use around the farm and we would once again like to thank all those that went to and organised the day! As you can see the blog has changed…

We can’t get enough of digging…

We just can't get enough of digging here at NBF and now we have moved all the sand into the arena it was time for a new challenge. Que 120 tonnes of top soil kindly donated by the NEC for us to use around the farm.  It looks like we have some super size moles around the farm! Thank you so much to the team at the NEC for dropping it off to us and for letting us have it. It's already made its way into the cottage garden and will be making its way down to the veg beds…
