Supporting Adults with Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Challenges on Their Journey to Employment
At Newlands Bishop Farm, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive in the workplace. Our Work Scheme is designed to help adults with learning disabilities and mental health challenges develop the essential skills, confidence, and experience they need to take the next steps toward employment or volunteering.
Preparing for the World of Work
The Work Scheme provides a structured and supportive environment where project workers can build both practical and personal skills that are vital for the workplace. Through a combination of classroom-based learning and hands-on tasks, participants gain confidence while working at their own pace.
Key areas of focus include:
- CV Writing – Learning how to create and update a professional CV that reflects individual strengths and experiences.
- Email & Digital Skills – Understanding how to use email for job applications and communication, along with basic IT skills.
- Time Management – Developing routines, understanding punctuality, and learning how to manage tasks throughout the day.
- Interview Preparation – Building confidence in speaking about skills, experience, and aspirations in a job setting.
- Teamwork & Communication – Practising how to work collaboratively and effectively in different environments.
- Work Experience Opportunities – Taking part in supported placements either on the farm (e.g., café, horticulture, woodwork) or in the local community.
Building Confidence Through Experience
Each project worker on the scheme receives individual support to help them set achievable goals and celebrate their progress. Whether it’s preparing for a job interview, attending a work placement, or volunteering in the community, our team is here every step of the way to offer encouragement and guidance.
Many participants go on to gain part-time or voluntary roles, while others use their new skills to become more independent in everyday life. Whatever the outcome, the Work Scheme is all about empowering individuals to believe in their abilities.
